I love the way you’ve framed self-reflection as a compassionate reappraisal—it’s such a refreshing approach compared to the harsh judgment we often place on ourselves.

This past year, I found myself asking questions like, Am I being kind to myself? or How can I balance moments of vulnerability with resilience? It’s been a journey of figuring out how to hug imperfection while still moving forward.

Your post really resonates with me, and it inspired a lot of the thoughts I shared in my latest Substack newsletter. I’d love for you (and anyone here!) to check it out and let me know what you think. Wishing everyone here a thoughtful and kind start to the new year!

Hi Gail…Thanks for this insightful piece. I want to add that self-awareness truly is foundational. It’s the compass that guides everything, from personal growth to how we show up in our relationships, careers, and creative pursuits. Without it, even our best intentions can feel misaligned or scattered.

I love the framing of your questions, especially as tools for harnessing joy and growth. They are not only reflective but empowering. If I were to add anything, perhaps it would be: “What beliefs or habits no longer serve me, and how might I release them?” Self-awareness often reveals not just what to embrace but also what to let go of. It’s a process that can be just as liberating.

Thank you for offering this thoughtful guide. It feels like a grounding pause amid the chaos of the season!

Thank you, Wasim, for your thoughtful comments. I completely agree with your wise suggestion to look at "what beliefs or habits no longer serve me." I hope others reading this will include your suggestion in their review of the year.
